The key To The 2024 Gallery Wall
Hello, lovely people!
If you’re looking to add some interest to your home, a gallery wall might just be for you. It’s the perfect project to showcase your favorite art pieces, photographs and most importantly inject some of your dazzling personality into your home.
Now if you’ve heard on the home decor grapevine that gallery walls are out... let me tell you this is just categorically not the case. I for one am an eternal Gallery Wall fan and it will be a hill I die on. The key to an 'on trend' 2024 Gallery Wall is less perfection and more embracing your personality and your eclectic side.
Below I've rounded up a step by step guide to help you create a gallery wall that feels stylish and very 2024.
Step 1: Choose Your Wall
First things first, you need to find a wall. This is basically any wall in your home that isn't bringing you joy. It could be your living room, up your stairs, your hallway, or your bedroom. Look for a space that feels a bit empty and is crying out for some personality.
Obviously consider the size of the wall, large walls can accommodate bigger arrangements, while smaller walls will need a bit of a more compact display, you don't want it to look too busy.
It doesn't even have to be just one wall, you could wrap your curation around an interior corner or a continue it over two walls and watch as people are enthralled by your mystery and home interiors genuis.
Step 2: Chose Your Art
Mix up your artwork - Add in some modern pieces and mix them up with vintage paintings. Add some black and white prints of your favourite people and put them next to a bright and colourful statement piece. Think outside the box. Pop special keepsakes in frames and add them to your wall, it could be your grandads medals, your first house key, tickets from your first gig together, your child's first tooth (might be a bit creepy but you see where I'm going)...
If you want the overall look to be somewhat 'put together' a good rule of thumb is to use colour trends. Chose two key colours and make sure all of your pieces include a shade or variation of those colours. This means that amongst the chaos there will be an overall unity to your wall.
Step 3: Frame Your Art
It's no secret, I love a good frame, but they are SO important when it comes to art,
And it will make a huge difference to the overall look of your gallery wall. Mismatched frames are good if you are feeling brave and want to get away from the matchy-matchy look for your very own curated collection.
A light frame will make the artwork pop, while a black frame creates contrast and coloured, patterned or adorned frames will add even more interest.
If you'd prefer all your frames were the same, have a good old play around with the way the frames are positioned. A perfectly symmetrical display may make your gallery wall look dated. Experiment with asymmetry and mix various frame sizes and shapes.
Keeping the frames the same but being playful with your layout will add balance to your display.
Step 4: Plan Your Layout
Once you have your curated collection of art and decor, it’s time to plan your layout.
This is a little trick I learned when curating my own gallery walls over the years, and it really does solve some gallery wall dramas.
Take the sheets of paper that come inside of your frames, and use these as a template for planning your layout. Arrange them on your wall or floor using washi tape so that you can easily make adjustments and get those frames into the perfect position.
Step 4: Hang with Care
Now you don't neccecarily HAVE to do this, I have been known to just go wild with some nails and a hammer and it's nothing a little polyfiller won't fix.
But, if you want to be a super profesh interiors legend, start with your largest or most significant piece, and hang it at eye level—generally around 57-60 inches from the floor is a good rule of thumb.
From there, build around it, keeping consistent spacing between frames. A spacing of 2-4 inches will work really well and will make sure your wall looks more strategic and less hot mess. Use a spirit level to ensure everything hangs straight (again, I've not always been known to do this and you can generally tell), don’t be afraid to adjust as needed!
Step 5: Enjoy
Once your beautiful new wall is hung, take a deep breath, step back and admire your incredible handiwork! Bravo!
You might find that some areas need a little extra something, or you might just think you are an absolute creative genius and leave as is.
Remember to invite all your friends and family round to ogle it as well, take a picture pop it on the gram and watch the compliments come flooding in.
And remember, a gallery wall is never really finished—feel free to switch out pieces or add new ones over time.
